Your pilgrimage with God

As followers of Christ, like the ancient Israelites, our hearts are to be set on the journey of our relationship with Jesus. In biblical times, pilgrimage often required walking long distances. Without radios or cell phones, the journey could be spent in quiet thought, listening, prayer, or reflecting with other travelers. One would certainly have the capacity to consider the journey itself, anticipate arriving at the destination, and on the way home, to reflect upon the trip taken.

“Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baca [Valley of Tears], they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools [blessings](Psalm 84:5,6).

People who set out on a walking journey will have moments of euphoria and times of aching feet and frustration. It’s all part of the trip.

Each of us is on a long journey, learning to follow the Lord. We’re learning more about his characteristics. We can anticipate where we have yet to go with him. We often pass through valleys of tears—tears of joy, deep sorrow, or wonder. As we follow, streams of living water bubble up from God to bless and refresh us.

Each step of our pilgrimage is taken in the safety of God’s world: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1). How is Christ walking with you and urging you on in your pilgrimage with him?
