I recently watched a national news anchor interview a potential presidential candidate. The news commentator iterated to the presidential hopeful a laundry list of all the things he’s worried about in our country. China, rising inflation, foreign wars, national debt, energy independence, border issues, and woke agendas were among the things that were keeping him up at night.

The soothing balm for all his worries seemed to lie in political change—namely, a new president. 

Granted, who sits in the White House can help effect change, but whether that change is for the “better” is a matter of what lenses we wear, isn’t it? Our past indoctrinations and biases are embedded in our preconceptions, so much so that it’s difficult, if not impossible, for any of us to see the future clearly.

But you know who can? God. He has known what will happen in our world, our country, and our lives from day one, and “nothing and no one can upset [his] plans” (Job 42:2 MSG).

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t go to the polls, but it does mean that we don’t need to throw up our hands in despair if we don’t like the outcome. Rather, we’d do better to reach our hands up in prayer, confidently trusting in God’s all-knowing leadership.

Don’t lose sleep. “Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word” (Proverbs 16:1 MSG).
