A unique perspective

Psalm 102 is entitled: “A prayer of an afflicted person who has grown weak and pours out a lament before the Lord.” With this in mind, read the psalmist’s self-description: “I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins. I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof” (verses 6,7). This cry begins a beautiful prayerful intercession with God.

Like a bird perched high on a roof, a person set apart by suffering has a unique view. This writer, torn by unique agony, is given unique perspective—a heart for God’s hurting people. Listen to this intervention: “But you, Lord … will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come. Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord: ‘The Lord looked down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death’” (verses 12,13,18-20).

As suffering outsiders, there is space to reflect not only on our own relationship with God but also to intercede for others. The Spirit gives perspective through prayer—conversation with God.

We aren’t called to prolong our suffering. Yet during extended pain, are there ways we can intervene on behalf of others? May God bless our searching, our pain, and our prayers.
