A discipline of praise

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. … Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music” (Psalm 98:1,4).

As I look at the words of this psalm, it is tempting to say, “This is more of the same.” Like in many psalms, the psalmist here calls upon each of us to sing and praise the Lord for his goodness.

Why does this sometimes seem tedious or even distasteful?

In moments when I’m turned away from God, I forget that I am a created being and praise seems like unnecessary repetition. Yes, I am precious to God and significant to him, but’s that because he has made me significant. It can be hard to remember that praise begins with acknowledging God’s role in my existence.

But there might be times when I don’t give thanks for my existence. Perhaps then I can use David’s prayer from Psalm 17:8: “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” It will help me rest in God’s love, giving me space to rest and breathe in safety.

This is why a discipline of praise is so useful. As I repeat something each day, regardless of my current perspective, I become conscious of God’s presence. By the work of the Spirit, my soul is brought into communion with God.

The psalms’ repetition of praise is good medicine. Through it God slows me down, reframes my life, and nurtures me through humble praise.
