The stress of the nurturer

Where is the stress in your life? I don’t mean what is causing you angst. But what are you focused on? This is a critical question for all of us who roll up our sleeves and help others grow. It can be exhausting and the outcomes disappointing. In 1 Corinthians 9, the apostle Paul cues us in on the stress of a nurturer.

“Am I not free? … Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work?” (verse 1). I could do other things, but I choose to serve Jesus by helping you reach your potential.

“I have made myself a slave to everyone” (verse 19). I refuse to assert my rights or emphasize what I need. You are my priority now.

“I have become all things to all people” (verse 22). You are unique. I want to put myself in your place and understand you.

“Run in such a way as to get the prize” (verse 24). I’m competitive. I don’t want to lose you. And I want you to be a winner.

“I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave” (verse 27). I have to take care of myself if I’m going to be there for you. I’m working hard on self-discipline.

“I myself will not be disqualified for the prize” (verse 27). We share in the gospel. I want both of us to be in heaven.

The stress of the nurturer is relieved by what the nurturer stresses.
