My joke about Saint Peter

Recently, I came up with a joke about Saint Peter that, in my opinion, is Netflix-special worthy. In fact, my joke is so good that I’ve seen churches around my community put it up on their official signs and even on the sides of their buildings! Ready for it? My joke is … Saint Peter!

I know, right? Did you just spew your coffee all over your computer? Did this book get stained due to my supernatural gift of being hilarious? No? Not even close? Well then … I guess that makes you like 100% of the other people whom I’ve shared my joke with.

You know who would have busted up at my two-word one-liner? Anyone who actually knew Peter. His brother Andrew would’ve loved it. His buddies James and John would’ve gotten sandy rolling in laughter on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Because Simon Peter was not a saint. He was a loudmouth—an always-talking, never-stopping, verbal-processing, speak-before-thinking kind of guy. He was a sinner who proved it every time he opened his mouth. (Which was often.)

But here’s the funny and beautiful thing about the Christian faith. Jesus turns sinners into saints. Christ is “our righteousness, holiness and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30). You are righteous and holy and redeemed because of Christ. You are, through faith, a saint!

Tell that to your buddies. I bet they’ll think it’s funny. But sometimes things that are funny are absolutely true.
