Help! is a brave word

I recently met a young woman who just became a Christian. During our conversation, she told me of a book about a horse, a mole, a fox, and a boy who become friends and teach each other the most important lessons in life. One time, the boy asks the horse, “What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” The horse replied with a single word: “Help.”

Straight from the horse’s mouth, right? There is much biblical truth to what our four-legged friend said, because some of our most important spiritual moments happen when we set aside our pride and ask someone for help. Your brave “help!” might be admitting that you are caught in a sin (moodiness, lashing out, fear, etc.) and in desperate need of encouragement and accountability. Or it might be confessing that you don’t really understand the Bible (What exactly is Communion? How can Jesus be both God and man in one person?) and need a mature Christian to disciple you. Or perhaps you realize that you can’t battle anxiety, raise your son, or get through your grief without a helping hand from your Father and your brothers and sisters in Christ. A humble “help!” might be the wisest, bravest, most Christian thing you say today.

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). God loves to help his children. Ask him (and others) for help in your personal time of need.
