When was the last time you read Revelation? It’s a fascinating book full of prophecy and the providence of God’s grace. The first three chapters contain seven letters written to seven pastors of seven Christian churches in modern-day Turkey. The last church, Laodicea, received zero praise from God: “Because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16).

These words were very personal to the Laodiceans because they couldn’t find any drinking water. Hierapolis was known for its medicinal hot springs. Colossae was known for its snow-cold water. Hot and cold water. Laodicea had none. They spent major money building aqueducts from Hierapolis to Laodicea to have fresh water, but it arrived a nasty lukewarm temperature. It wasn’t refreshing to drink; they wanted to spit it out of their mouths.

God felt the same about the Laodiceans’ lukewarm spiritual laziness. They were so busy enjoying God’s blessings that they forgot about God. What’s causing you to be spiritually lukewarm? What blessing is distracting you from faithfully focusing on Christ? Sports. Cabin. Children. Career. Restfully sleeping in.

The Laodiceans broke the First Commandment. They placed things before Christ. So do we.

The amazing truth is that Jesus didn’t condemn them; he called out to them. He wanted their hearts. He wants yours. He loves you. He calls out to you to reprioritize your life. What needs to be less so that Christ becomes more?
