“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust’” (Psalm 91:1,2).

Words like refuge and fortress in Bible passages can sometimes slip past us. Perhaps we’ve heard them so many times that they are nearly too familiar, or perhaps we’ve never taken the time to define them and really consider what it means to call God “my refuge” or “my fortress.”

A refuge is a place of shelter. People fleeing violence in their homes or countries need a safe place to go. A wildlife refuge is an area of land or water that has been set aside so a variety of species of animals can live in safety.

A fortress can be thought of as a castle. It could also be a secure geographical spot like an island or a secluded spot hidden in the mountains.

What happens if you and I take the time to personalize these pictures of God as a refuge or a fortress? How do you relate to these pictures of God?
