If you watch the TV show Shark Tank, you have seen ambitious entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to the dais of successful investors. The contestants all want money and “shark” expertise to move their ideas forward. The sharks always ask about the predictors of success: revenue trends, profit margins, growth potential. What seems to be most persuasive to the sharks is if the contestants have a compelling idea of what they are trying to do. Do they have a clear mission in mind or just a vague notion? Some contestants struggle to explain what it is they are trying to accomplish. That as much as anything causes the sharks to tap out. But if the idea is novel and the contestants are convincing, they may get multiple offers from the sharks.
Jesus came “to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). He pursued it without wavering. He demonstrated willingness to leave many and go after one lost sheep if necessary, because that is what he came to do.
People who are heavily invested in worthwhile pursuits experience a great deal of fulfillment in their lives. They have a sense of calling and enjoy it most days. People who haven’t found that sweet spot are vulnerable to unhappiness and look to unhealthy substitutes for personal satisfaction. Every activity under the sun needs all-in investors. Reflect on your personality, God-given gifts, and talents and find your purpose in his great kingdom.
