It’s easy to trust God’s promises when we see the blessings, but it is much harder when we see challenges. God freed his Old Testament people by sending ten plagues on Egypt. Pharaoh chased and trapped the Israelites at the Red Sea. What do we do when we see Pharaoh’s army at our backs and the Red Sea of challenges standing between us and the Promised Land?
We remember what Moses told the Israelites: “Do not be afraid. … The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:13,14). Who fights for you? The Lord, who created and sustains the universe. The One who has saved his people repeatedly and shaped all of world history to keep his promise of sending a Savior for this world. Doesn’t that put your “impossible” problems into perspective? When the impossible in life meets God’s promises, remember that it is the Lord who will fight for you.
Are you worried about your sin? You need only to be still. Look at the cross and see the Lord fight to the death for you. Are you worried about sickness? You need only to be still. Look at the empty tomb, and see the Lord defeat death for you. Are you worried about having enough? You need only to be still and see Jesus’ ascended hands raised in blessing over you. When the impossible in your life meets God’s promises, know that the Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still.
