We worry out loud and call it prayer.
We get bossy with God and call it prayer.
We complain about our circumstances and call it prayer.
We ask for a shortcut to avoid work and call it prayer.
If God were to grade the quality of your prayers, what kind of grade would he give you? He does not just grade based on the words you say but based on the thoughts and motives that are behind your words.
Our prayers can reveal worry.
Our prayers can reveal idolatry.
Our prayers can reveal lack of trust.
Our prayers can reveal laziness.
It is impossible for you to pray perfectly. But whatever you do, don’t let that stop you from praying.
God hears your prayers as perfect for Jesus’ sake. By faith in Jesus, your prayers not only reach heaven. They are pleasing to God in heaven. And he answers.
Jesus already handled the sinfulness that can come out during your prayer time. He took it away and replaced it with his righteousness. Jesus became the perfect prayer and the perfect answer to every prayer. So even on the days when you’re afraid you’re getting it wrong, lift up your prayer to God. He hears and answers for Jesus’ sake.
“Hear my prayer, Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me” (Psalm 86:6,7).
