What makes you so great?

Kevin Bacon was the star in the original Footloose movie. Remember the famous scene where he jumps around and dances in an old warehouse? About a decade ago, Kevin shared a conversation he had with his youngest son who had just seen the movie that had made his dad so famous. The boy asked Kevin about the warehouse scene and how he jumped on the roof and swung from the rafters. Kevin told his son that he didn’t do that part. He told his son that a stuntman dressed like him and did the things he couldn’t do that were too dangerous.

Next Kevin’s son asked him how he spun around the gym bar and landed without falling. Kevin admitted that the stuntman did that too.

Finally, Kevin’s son asked him what he actually did in the movie. Kevin replied sheepishly, “I got the glory.”

Hmm. Someone else doing the work and giving the glory to someone else. That sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

“I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth” (2 Samuel 7:9). In this verse, God is reminding King David where his greatness came from. Like David of the Bible, what makes you and me great is that Jesus took the punishment we deserved and gave us the glory! He did what we could not and gives us the fame.

Jesus alone makes us great!
