Do you live in fear of powerful people, or do you find yourself drawn toward following them?
In every age of humankind since the fall, rulers have attempted to position themselves in the place of God. They ruthlessly build their kingdoms, and carnage is their legacy. Yet all the earth’s strongmen, both the ones we fear and the ones in whom we secretly trust, are under God’s dominion.
Contrast these earthly power-grabbers with the awe-inspiring description of our God: “You are the radiant one. You are more majestic than the ancient mountains” (Psalm 76:4 GW).
We have the option to meditate on and live under God’s rule, even as earthly leaders burn and pillage. God sees. God listens. God is working. Our perspective and possibilities are clearest when we submit to God’s reign: “Make vows to the Lord your God, and keep them. Let everyone around him bring gifts to the one who must be feared. He cuts short the lives of influential people. He terrifies the kings of the earth” (Psalm 76:11,12 GW).
Our God is the radiant one, more majestic than the ancient mountains. If you find yourself preoccupied with the power dynamics in this world, consider dwelling on the opening words of the Lord’s Prayer: “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Pray and work to follow this King, bringing his goodness and power to every circumstance.
