When I was a kid, I remember paging through a catalog and seeing a product aimed at aging women. They were reading glasses—but with a twist. The lenses of the glasses were hinged, so the wearer could flip one lens down to apply makeup to that eye, while being able to see through the lens of the other eye. They looked, well, silly.
Decades later, I am wondering if they still make these handy glasses and where I can purchase them.
Oh, the indignities of aging! Our bodies and our minds are breaking down. We can now throw out our backs by simply sneezing. At best, we forget why we walked into a room. At worst, we forget how to eat or the faces of even those we love the most.
Is your aging body or mind betraying you? Do you groan with the psalmist, “Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone” (71:9)? I get it. But there can be joy in aging. The older we get, the more serious we become about God’s purpose for us with the time we have remaining.
The psalmist also says, “[The righteous] will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green” (92:14).
Are you still breathing? You are still producing fruit. Even if your mind gets cloudy or you can no longer walk on your own, you can still praise God with your lips and share the reason for the joy you have in Jesus.
