The way and the where

The other day in a sermon-inspired experiment, I asked Siri, “Give me the directions.” Can you guess what she said back? Without missing a beat, my phone replied, “Where are you going?” Good logic, Siri. You can’t know the way unless you know the where

This reminds me of Jesus’ conversation with his disciple Thomas: “‘You know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’” (John 14:4-6). Good logic, Thomas. You can’t figure out the directions unless you know the destination. So Jesus told him in the simplest terms: “My Father’s house is the where, and I am the way. If heaven is your destination, then point your faith in my direction.”

Don’t you love the simplicity of it all? There’s no mystery here, no wondering if you’re doing enough or improving enough or are enough. No needing to doubt that your lifelong battle with sin will dead-end before arriving at God’s address. Jesus makes the simple and breathtaking offer that he is all you need to get into the arms of God. Our Father in heaven is the where. His Son, Jesus, is the way!
