Few things get me quite as excited about my Bible as Paul’s words to Timothy: “All Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16). Break down that simple sentence and tell me that it doesn’t take your breath away!

God-breathed—That unique phrase means that the Scriptures come directly out of God’s heart. Just like the breath that comes out of your mouth starts deep within you, so also the Book that Christians love comes from deep within God.

Scripture—That word literally means “written things.” Think of a script, the written document that actors follow, or a scribe, whose job is to write things down. Just like actors follow the script that comes from the heart of its writer, so also we believers follow the script that comes from the heart of the Spirit.

All—This might be my favorite word of all. The Bible isn’t 10 percent God-breathed, like a kids’ juice box that contains 10 percent real fruit. No, all the Scripture, from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, is breathed out by God. Every chapter and verse comes not from mere men but from the God whose words are always true and always for our good.

Put it all together and you have a thrilling truth—the Bible is God speaking to you. Don’t be deceived by that wrinkled cover or those standard issue pages. All Scripture is God-breathed!
