“The floods have lifted up, O Lord” (Psalm 93:3 ESV).
Water is a force. If you have stood by an ocean or one of the Great Lakes, you have perhaps witnessed the power of water. If you’ve been caught in floodwaters, you’ve experienced helplessness in the face of surging water.
It’s hard to save yourself from water, whether real water or the waters of hardship. It’s a lot of pressure to figure everything out, even if you are blessed with many resources. It’s even harder to deal when you have no power and resources.
But what held true in the days of the psalmist is still true today: “The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty. … The world is established; it shall never be moved. … Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!” (93:1,4 ESV).
There is both comfort and instruction in this psalm. Perhaps you need reassurance that there is someone who will bear you through the floodwaters of tragedy that are rising and threatening your life. Perhaps you need a reminder that God is far greater than you or the earthly powers upon which you rely. Only God controls the waters.
God reigns, and we ourselves are not God. God is actively ruling. He is strong to help. Consider sitting with this psalm today, and let the reality of God’s dominion wash over you and bring his peace.
