Have you been tempted to sugarcoat the story of your faith walk with God? In Psalm 78, the writer shares a story. In some respects, it’s a tragic story of humanity’s failed attempts at self-reliance. But it’s also a story of God’s provision and persistent work and caring for his beloved children. We can learn a lot from this honest story.
“I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old—things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” (verses 2-4).
What if, rather than hiding in shame, we shared the contrasting stories of our spiritual failures and successes and God’s faithfulness? The psalmist gives us good reason to do so: “So the next generation would know. … Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds” (verses 6,7).
We are God’s beloved. We share our stories in a spirit of freedom. We all fail; but In Christ, we can grow and change. Our vulnerability becomes a doorway to a haven where others can admit their own struggles and experience God’s love.
It’s not too late. Jesus’ followers begin again each moment. Look at the works of God; see his faithfulness in your life. You are taking a journey with him. Ask for the Spirit’s guidance and wisdom as you bear witness to his work in your heart and life.
