Samson: Small is mighty

How do you envision Samson? With a mountain of muscles? Taller than everyone? What if he just looked like an average guy?

In Judges 16, the Philistines tried to discover the truth behind Samson’s impossible-to-understand strength. They bribed his girlfriend, Delilah, saying, “See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength” (verse 5). If Samson’s strength was from Herculean-sized muscles, they wouldn’t have bribed Delilah. Maybe Samson was 5 feet 6 inches tall and 135 pounds. With that small frame, you’d ask how Samson could do such mighty things!

What’s your great strength? I doubt you can bench-press 782 pounds, which is the current world record. Your Samson-sized great strength is anything you do dedicated to God. In Matthew 10, Jesus declares that even giving someone a cup of water in his name is an act of great faith strength. The little things matter to God just as much as the big things.

The devil is good at convincing us that little acts of kindness are meaningless. When you feel that way, read these words: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Don’t listen to the devil! He’s afraid of you shining your light of faith. Light scatters the darkness! Make him flee as you live your life of faithful service to others.
