“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day” (Exodus 20:11).

On day six of creation, God created Adam and Eve. There was evening and there was morning, and then the seventh day came—the day that God set aside for rest.

As you put that together, think about this from Adam and Eve’s perspective. Their first full day in this creation was spent resting. But resting from what?

Normally rest is something we do at the end of an activity. For me, the first thing that comes to mind is when I cut my lawn. It takes several hours to pick up after my dog, run the mower, trim along the fence, and put everything away. But when it is done, it feels great to rest and admire the job well done.

God offers you another kind of rest. Adam and Eve rested before they had done any work because they were able to admire God’s good work. Their work would have a time and a place. But the most important thing on that seventh day was to adore God and admire his work.

Try that out this week. Don’t save rest as the last thing you do. Begin with rest. Adore your Savior and admire his work of salvation. You already have his love and approval even before you’ve done a single thing.
