You can tell a lot about a society by what they read. The first issue of LIFE magazine was published in 1936. It was a humor and general interest publication, focusing on photojournalism that captured the essence of significant world events and people.

In 1923 and 1933, TIME magazine and Newsweek, respectively, hit newsstands. Each examined current events from its own political perspective.

The 1970s brought a focus shift in journalism. People and US hit newsstands. Stories and photos of Hollywood celebrities and other “elites” were their nucleus. In 1979, Self brought self-help articles on health, fitness, food, beauty, finance, relationships, and sex.

Today selfies and opinions streamed via social media have all but replaced objective, researched media forms.

With each passing year, we’ve turned more inward, focusing on our own importance. With such self-absorption, it’s no wonder that today many think they can define their own identities and determine their own truth. All the while Satan smiles because he knows the more narcissistic we become the less we will see a need for God.

No wonder the apostle Paul warned, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).

How do we renew our minds? By getting our information from the most trustworthy media source—the Word of God.
