Putting first things first

The church father Augustine talked about priorities when he called God the “highest good.” We cannot properly love God’s gifts if we put those gifts above him. They become idols. So what has priority in your life?

Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33). The way to seek his righteousness is to see his love for you in worship through the Word, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. Is God being redundant? No. Jesus knows your heart. He knows how easily you can doubt his love. You hear the pastor say, “Your sins are forgiven.” Does Jesus mean you? Absolutely! But it’s so easy to think, “He wouldn’t say that if he knew what I’ve done.” Then Jesus takes you back to the font and says, “Here I made you my child. I love you. I forgive you.” Does Jesus mean it? Absolutely! But you might think, “Yeah, but that was long ago. I have walked away from you, Jesus.” Finally, Jesus brings you to the Lord’s Supper and says, “Take and eat. Take and drink. My body and my blood for your forgiveness.” And your heart has no escape. Jesus means you!

That love helps you and me put all the other things in our lives in the right place. Let’s reevaluate our priorities in life and seek first the kingdom of the One who sought us first.
