According to the historian Josephus, who lived around the time of Jesus, nothing could wow your heart quite like a glimpse of Jerusalem. He said the sun’s reflection off the gold of the temple was amazing—like looking into the sun itself. This is why Jesus’ disciples marveled as they sat on the Mount of Olives and looked down on the sacred city and the temple.
But not Jesus. “As [Jesus] approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it” (Luke 19:41). Why would such beauty move our Savior to tears? “[Jesus] said, ‘If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes’” (Luke 19:42). The people of Jerusalem didn’t know where to find true peace, a fact that made Jesus weep.
Jesus cares that much about people. He cares that much about you. It moves him to see you searching for peace in ways that won’t work—more money, more success, the perfect body, the perfect family. He knows that no matter how momentarily good those things are, they won’t last. That’s why he’s offering you something better. He’s offering you himself.
Find peace in Jesus alone. That kind of faith will make your Savior weep … for joy.
