Music’s message matters more

There is an argument that every teenager has with their parents sooner or later. It’s when a parent asks, “What is this song about?” And the teenager says, “I don’t know. I just like it.” And the parent raises an eyebrow, “Is that swearing?! What is this music teaching you?” And the teenager says, “I don’t know! I just like it, okay?”

Paying more attention to the sound than the substance of a song is a dangerous habit for teens and adults alike. Because good music without a good message can move you, but it can’t do much good for you. It’s a distraction instead of a solution.

Maybe that’s why the songs in the Bible, especially the Psalms, have short references to the tunes but full descriptions of the texts. Like when the singer-songwriter David wrote, “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works” (Psalm 145:3-5).

Catch that? David longed to meditate not on the beat but on the blessed works of the Lord. As we prepare our hearts for the holiday season, let’s do the same, giving our attention to the message we find within the nostalgic music. If and when we do, we will find a peace that endures long past the last measure.
