A few years after we moved into our one hundred-year-old home, I was cleaning out the highest, most-hard-to-reach shelf in our bedroom closet when I came across a mysterious and dusty bundle of letters from the 1940s. What an amazing find! Even better, they were sweet, nostalgic love letters from a husband to his wife as one of them was staying with family in our house more than 60 years ago. I was so thrilled to find these relics of the past with their simple, yet endearing lines and honest expressions of love.
Not long afterward, I happened to post about the find on my personal blog, and the couples’ remaining grandson—who was the only member of that family left—contacted me and received these priceless family heirlooms.
We too have a family heirloom … love letters written to us many, many years ago in the hope that we would continue reading and remember the great love our heavenly Father has for us. The Bible—his love letter to us—continues to instruct and comfort us daily, even thousands of years after it was originally written. And better yet, we can share these letters with others, hoping to reunite with other members of our extended Christian family. What a love story!
“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness’” (Jeremiah 31:3).
