Little tin cup

One item in my yard holds great value. I bought it for $1. It’s a little tin cup that I hang on a hook from our old pine tree. In the summer, when I’m gardening and overheated, I take joy from filling that cup directly from the hose and enjoying a long cold drink of water. Yes, there is the slight tang of garden dirt and tin, but that’s the best part.

You see, when I was little, my great grandparents (who came over from Germany) had a little tin cup just like it tied to the water spigot outside their farmhouse. And whenever I wanted a drink … oh, the taste of those memories!

I love history. Anything old with a story gives me a thrill. As you can probably imagine, I love antiquing … seeing the odd assortment of items that used to constitute a home and life for people who lived a long time before me.

I feel like there’s a lot to learn in this space.

God talks many times in the Bible about giving consideration to people and events that happened long ago. The Bible books of Chronicles and Kings are stuffed full of stories of various leaders, good and bad. And the word remember in Greek or Hebrew is in the Bible over 250 times.

Remembering is important. This goes for the big stuff and the little stuff. So take some time today to remember. And thank God for all that came before.

“Remember the former things, those of long ago” (Isaiah 46:9).
