The Christmas gift-hunting season is on for those who do some early shopping. For some this is a thrill; for others it’s a nerve-racking chore. But whatever the motivation, when the “perfect” gift is found, it’s because we expect it will be graciously received. However, there will be times that balloon pops, and we might hear these real-life comments:
“I hope you saved the receipt.”
“Here, you keep it—I’ll never use it.”
“Hey thanks; now I have two of them.”
“This IS a joke, right?”
Truth be told, haven’t we occasionally been the balloon poppers? The only perfect gifts are those given by our generous Father in heaven. Yet how many times do we grumble over our bodies: too average or too unhealthy; our clothes: too outdated or too few; our work: too boring or too difficult?
“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17).
The greatest gift God ever gave was Jesus. For us and our grumbling, he gave his Son to be born in this world to live life right—to give and receive in perfect obedience and to pay the entire sin price for us to receive the gift of salvation. He showers us with gifts for every need and prepares a heavenly mansion for the world to come. Even so, some will reject this perfect gift.
Lord, guard our hearts in the wisdom of your presence.
