Joyful love for God

Sometimes we tend to be more exuberant about our sports teams than we are about God. If God is both the root and apex of everything, wouldn’t we rejoice over him the way we do other things? We can take Psalm 87 as an example of praise, even if some of the words are unclear to us.

“He has founded his city on the holy mountain. The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the other dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are said of you, city of God: ‘I will record Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me—Philistia too, and Tyre, along with Cush—and will say, “This one was born in Zion.”’ Indeed, of Zion it will be said, ‘This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High himself will establish her.’ The Lord will write in the register of the peoples: ‘This one was born in Zion.’ As they make music they will sing, ‘All my fountains are in you’” (verses: 1-7).

This psalm overflows with praise for God, his dwelling place, and his acceptance of all people. At the end, we read a joyous metaphorical outpouring of praise: “All my fountains are in you.”

This psalm exudes the refreshment of a cool lake on a hot day. We live in the circle of God’s love. He loves all his creation, and praise rises to his ears from every corner of the world.

God’s goodness overflows. Holy Spirit, help us learn to take the risk of expressing joyful love for you!
