Do you know the story of Junior Bridgeman? He played for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1975 to 1984 and then again in 1986 to 1987, averaging 13.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. However, after his basketball career, his life really started to flourish. A natural entrepreneur, he bought a number of restaurants like Chili’s and Wendy’s. His businesses were so successful that he became one of the wealthiest former athletes in the world, with a net income of 1.4 billion dollars.
But on March 11, 2025, while preparing to speak at a conference, Bridgeman suffered a massive heart attack and died.
When I heard the news, I thought about how no matter how much money a person makes, they still have to face death. No amount of success can outmaneuver mortality. As Job said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart” (Job 1:21).
Death seems like such a cruel and unavoidable fate. No one asked to be born, but here we are, finite beings, marching to the day we meet our Maker. While we can avoid almost every other hardship, death is guaranteed.
In isolation, these ideas can create paralyzing fear. It’s no wonder that the study of longevity is one of the fastest-growing industries in the health and wellness space.
But when we are filled with fear, we hear Jesus say, “In my Father’s house are many rooms. I am going there to prepare a place for you. I will come back so you can be with me where I am. I am the way to the place you go. Trust me” (John 14:2-6 paraphrased).
That’s what Mr. Bridgeman did.
In the end, Bridgeman’s faith in Jesus and his love for his family and friends was most important to him. While on this earth, he used God’s gifts and opportunities to the best of his abilities to the glory of God. When his celestial room was ready, Jesus called Bridgeman to his side.
That same hope is available to you. You might not be able to produce the same level of success and wealth as Junior Bridgeman, but you have access to the same Savior.
Yes, you and I will die, but we need not fear the inevitable. Our Savior is preparing our rooms. When they are ready, he will come to get us. Because of Jesus, we can face both life and death with hope and courage.
