When a creative person dares to present an outside-the-box idea, there always seems to be a hater lurking in the shadows: “Looks like *someone* has too much time on their hands!” The dissenter then explains why the group should side with the safer option and take the road well-traveled.

I wonder if that happened to God after he created the platypus and narwhal. I bet some fallen angel in the peanut gallery muttered, “Looks like *Someone* has too much time on his hands. One type of fish is plenty!”

What’s a better response? After contemplating the ingenuity of the Creator, the psalmist was inspired to write a love poem: “How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures” (Psalm 104:24).

How many are the Lord’s works? Try counting them. Go outside and make a mental list of all the things you could never make in a million years. Then praise God for what he made in six days. Imitate the Creator. Honor him with your originality. Glorify him with your resourcefulness, and put the spotlight on him with your innovation.

The term Christian creative should not be an oxymoron (“jumbo shrimp”) but a redundancy (“true facts”). As human beings created in the image of God, creativity can be commonplace. In the boardroom, the classroom, and the kitchen, let creativity flourish! Think outside the confines of the concrete, take the road less traveled, and fan that creative spark. It was woven into your fiber by the Creator.
