My husband and I recently became grandparents for the first time. I can’t seem to stop telling everyone the amazing news, to the point that I’m even starting to annoy myself. “How am I doing today, you ask? Well, I just became a grandparent! Want to hear all about it?” I want to shout it from the rooftops. I want to plaster it all over social media. I want to go on and on (and on and on) about it to anyone who will listen.
The first Christians also had great news to share. Peter and John, Jesus’ friends and disciples, got into hot water with the hard-hearted religious leaders of the day. They healed a man who couldn’t walk in the name of the risen Jesus and were then ordered to cease and desist and thrown into jail. Their response? “We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20).
These two men were on fire for the gospel. The doubts and questions they had while Jesus was on earth with them were now erased, replaced with the zeal and conviction of faith that the Holy Spirit had burned into their hearts on the Day of Pentecost.
As hard as it is to believe, we as Jesus followers have even better news to share than that first grandchild or that long-awaited promotion or that good medical test result. We have the news of the risen Jesus, the greatest good news of all.
Lord, give us the fire to share that good news!
