Have you had a conversation with God when life’s circumstances seem a dark contrast with what’s written about God’s goodness? In Psalm 89, the psalmist wrestles in this way with God.
He begins by noting and praising God’s loving actions: “I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever” (verses 1,2).
He acknowledges that living under God’s justice and wisdom is humanity’s best choice: “Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, Lord” (verse 15).
But then he has hard questions: “How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire?” (verse 46). He wrestles with God: “Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all humanity!” (verse 47).
Perhaps surprisingly, he ends with blessing. He pleads for God to bring new blessing to his people. And he blesses the Lord: “Praise be to the Lord forever! Amen and Amen” (verse 52).
This conversation has a place in our lives. Sometimes it’s passion filled and quick. Other times it’s drawn out in thoughtfulness and anguish. Do you have hard questions for God? How could this be a model for your talk with the Lord? Find a quiet place for your conversation, and remember that authentic conversation requires good listening too. God be with you.
