God’s love for you

If you are one of those people who loves to learn and can’t go to church without taking notes, this devotion is for you.

The Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell Aaron and his sons, “This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: ‘The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.’’’ So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them’” (Numbers 6:22-27).

In Hebrew, the three lines of the blessing are intentionally crafted. The first line contains three Hebrew words, the second line five Hebrew words, and the third line seven Hebrew words, as if the blessing is trying to expand and increase your soul’s realization of God’s good gifts.

The sacred name of the Lord shows up three times in those three lines, a hint, perhaps, of the Trinity. The Father blesses us. Jesus is gracious to us. The Spirit gives us peace.

But my favorite part is how personal this blessing is. It is meant for the masses but is worded in the singular—“the Lord bless you.” Hebrew has different words for you (singular) and you all (plural), and this is the singular in every single line. It’s like God is looking right at you, saying, “You are so blessed.”

Ah, isn’t Hebrew grammar the best?! May you grasp today the height and width and depth of God’s love for you (singular) in Jesus.
