It can be discouraging to be a Christian in today’s social and political culture. We are pressured not to express our faith or God’s biblical views on important issues.
As a member of my city’s common council, I’m often interviewed for the newspaper. I constantly want to sprinkle my faith into my comments. Nothing scripturally heavy, just genuine ways to share God’s plan or his blessings. Then the newspaper comes out. My comments are quoted but rarely are my references to God’s Word or my faith. I often think, “What’s the point?” Then I do a quick hand smack to my forehead as I tell myself that it’s not about me or my intentions!
Isaiah 55:10,11 says: “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish … so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
God compares his Word to the rain and snow because, like them, it always fulfills his purposes. I need to remember that at the times my faith-filled comments are not used in the paper. Maybe God used those words to share with the interviewer, not the reader? It is important for us to be reminded that God’s Word may not do what we expect it to, but it will accomplish what he intended it to!
