Freedom in Christ

On Saturday mornings in the 80s, I remember seeing the School House Rock tagline that boasted, “Knowledge is power.” One episode of this cartoon was about BILL, who was sitting on Capitol Hill. This cartoon explained to young listeners in word and song how legislation works.

Perhaps another tour of that show is needed because a recent poll cites that 10% of the population knows that the First Amendment protects freedom of speech. About 33% has no clue what the amendment says, and only 19% realizes it protects freedom of religion.

In March 2020 we weren’t singing any tunes in church. Churches closed, and some are still closed. I preached my Easter sermon to an empty church, aside from a few cardboard cutouts that some creative members made. Many felt as though our freedoms were taken away from us.

In some respects, yes. In reality, Scripture tells us, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). Christ has indeed set us free. Is there a pet sin that’s holding you down? Fire off the shackles and chains with the victory cry that Calvary’s cross won and continues to win for you daily. Buildings and church services can come and go, but that can never take away our freedom in Christ.
