Do not share your faith

If you are hesitant to share your faith with others, I have some good news. When Jesus commissioned his disciples to go out into the world, he did not exactly tell them to share their faith: [Jesus] rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen” (Mark 16:14).

Their faith was uncompelling, to say the least. It was lacking. It needed to grow. If their fumbling faith was all they had to share, they would have been better off staying at home.

Maybe you feel similarly. You believe in Jesus, but at the same time you are wrestling with some of the things he taught. Maybe you are trying to make sense of a theological truth. Or maybe you are just trying to sort out God in your heart.

Rather than calling us to share our faith, Jesus called his disciples to do this: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15).

Jesus commissioned us to share the gospel, not our faith. What’s the difference?

Bringing others to faith in Jesus does not depend on how well we understand God, nor does it depend on us being able to explain things perfectly. The good news of Jesus is powerful all by itself to both strengthen our faith and bring others to faith.

So take the pressure off yourself. Don’t worry about having everything figured out. Focus on sharing the good news of Jesus, and let his gospel do the work.
