If the thought of death bothers you, I don’t blame you. In the beginning, God didn’t create things to die or say goodbye. Visitations and funerals and graveside services weren’t what our Father intended when he made the universe “very good.” That’s why in the Bible, death is called our “enemy” (1 Corinthians 15:26). That’s why when Jesus himself went to a funeral, he wept (John 11:35). Death bothered him too.
In this broken world, things die. Dreams, hopes, and friendships die. Flowers wilt, bread grows stale, and divorce kills sacred vows. Widows walk into church every week. Miscarriages happen every month. A time will come when you will attend far more funerals than weddings. How will you handle the death that is everywhere in this life?
What about Easter? The same Jesus who rose on Easter morning once said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (John 11:25,26). In the blink of an eye, your post-death life will get unbelievably wonderful.
Heavenly paradise, by comparison, makes spring break stink and the Florida sun seem lame. In heaven you get to see God. God!! Some people are terrified to die. Not us. We have Jesus, the Son of God, the resurrection and the life. And every day from now until then is not just one day closer to death; it’s one day closer to the best life you can imagine.
