Connecting with God’s roles

Do you have different friends who excel at different tasks? Perhaps you have a friend who’s good at listening. Maybe another is better at being your exercise buddy. And still another might be the best at giving you good advice.

The same is true for God.

One day he may be our Counselor, another time our Healer, still another our Warrior or Father or Friend. All these are different roles that he fulfills for us.

And it’s okay to approach God specifically in one of his roles. When you’re sick, you visit a doctor. When you need to talk, you see a counselor.

So if you’re ever unsure how to pray or feel like words are failing you, it helps to ask yourself this: Which aspect of God do I need to connect with today? Do I need a healer? a friend? a father? a warrior? He’s good at all of it.

And it makes sense to approach God, asking for what we know he’s good at doing. He has so many different roles for just this purpose. No matter what we are going through in our lives, we can be confident that there is a role or title that he carries that will qualify him to help us.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
