There’s a tradition in my family that I love.
When my parents were young church workers, fresh out of college, they didn’t make a lot of money. This was in the 70s, and one Christmas, with less than $20 to spend on the holiday meal, my dad went to the store and came home with bread, pickles, cheese, and sausage. We made a little appetizer “feast” and opened our presents on Christmas Eve with this simple meal. And we never felt like we were lacking.
Today, we still have our Christmas Eve feast, but oh how the table groans under the weight of all the amazing food! But always—always—I remember how it started and remember to be grateful for every little blessing in my life.
Our good Father provides for us. He gives us every good thing we need to sustain us.
So this Christmas season, as you’re enjoying a turkey or the various yummy baked goodies that parade out of the kitchen oven, remember from whose good and gracious hands these blessings flow. And take a moment to be aware and thankful.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (Matthew 6:25,26).
