The other day I stumbled across a 2008 version of my bucket list, a document of 71 things I wanted to accomplish before I died. Most of the list, however, was laughable. “Learn how to moonwalk” or “See Billy Joel in concert.” What?! Out of all the joys that life can offer, I chose dancing like Michael Jackson and singing with Billy Joel?
As humans, we are crummy at anticipating what will make us happy. We think the house and the money and the trips and the devices will create a satisfying life, but time often reveals these moments to be, well, momentary. They do make us happy for a bit, but they are not enough to fill up the bucket of our hearts.
But God can. “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you” (Psalm 63:1-5).
Think long and hard today about the unfailing love of God. The Holy Spirit will remind you that your Savior’s love is better than anything on your bucket list, because his blessings endure forever.
