“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”—Simon Peter (John 6:68)
Just because you know something doesn’t mean you believe it. For example, you can know that eating an entire bag of chips is unhealthy, while at the same time believing that your situation justifies you eating an entire bag of chips. (I might have done that a few times in my life.)
If you have ever been frustrated by a habit or behavior that you were unable to change, there is a good chance that your beliefs were to blame.
If you get to the end of a stressful day and you decide to eat or drink more than you should, you might believe that the way to peace is through what you consume.
If you erupt in anger at your misbehaving kids, it might be because you believe that their behavior reflects your worth.
If you cheat or steal, it might be because you believe that the world is not treating you fairly.
If you try to conform your behaviors without transforming your beliefs, neither will happen. But if you transform your beliefs, your behavior will follow along.
This is where the power of Jesus’ words comes in. His words do not just reveal knowledge. They connect with your heart in a way that creates and grows faith.
Your peace comes through him. Your worth was established by his sacrifice. His love is unconditional. Don’t just know his words. Believe them.
