Paul’s words struck me initially as a bit too proud to have a place in the Holy Bible. “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9). But then it dawned on me that Paul was writing a joyful letter from jail. He was falsely accused, unjustly imprisoned, and left to spend some of his prime career years under arrest—and yet he was bursting with joy! I guess he did deserve to be an example for those of us who struggle to rejoice.
Do you know anyone like Paul? Can you think of anyone who is in the same boat as you but has more joy than you? Same school, same never-ending homework, same annoying classmate, but your friend is smiling most days. Same job, same boss, same Monday-to-Friday frustrations, but your coworker isn’t checking the clock or saying she needs a drink just to cope. Same pandemic, same mandates, same situation, but your brother isn’t afraid or angry. In other words, is there someone who is like you but doesn’t think like you?
If so, I have some homework. Interview your Paul. Reach out and ask him, “What are you thinking?” Figure out what’s going through his head when challenges come his way. Write down his answers. Put them into practice. And the God of peace will help you restore your joy.
