Always have hope

I once knew a child who would put her hands over her eyes if she did not want someone in the room with her. It was cute but delusional. Covering your eyes doesn’t change the reality.

Is that how we view Christian hope sometimes? Like we’re just covering up our eyes and refusing to see reality? We cry out to a world filled with war and crime and school shootings and sickness and death: “Our God is good! Our God is in control!” At low times, we wonder if those words seem empty to others and to us too.

The psalmist writes, “As for me, I will always have hope. … You who have done great things. Who is like you, God?” (Psalm 71:14,19). That’s a great question. Who is like our God? He once mercifully spared Adam and Eve when they sinned. He once powerfully divided the waters of the Red Sea so his people could pass through safely. Our God once sent his Son, our Savior, to die on a cross. Who would make himself weak like our God? Our God once did that … for you and me. Who, O God, is like you? No one.

Christian hope doesn’t come from living life with your hands over your eyes, refusing to see reality. Instead it’s taking your hands off your eyes to see the reality of what God has done.

You can always have hope!
