A spiritual routine

My youngest child recently got her driver’s permit. For her first drive, we deliberately picked the biggest, most empty parking lot we could find. It was perfectly safe. But as she sat behind the wheel and attempted to tap the gas for the first time, she hadn’t even reached 1 mph before she engaged the brake. She curled her hands up over her eyes and moaned, “Ahh! I can’t do this! I’m gonna kill someone!”

And yet, the very next day, she had her first official driving lesson with an instructor and confidently walked into the kitchen afterward and announced, “I’m a REALLY good driver!”

What a difference a day makes.

Sometimes repetition is all it takes for us to improve—or at least to FEEL really confident about doing new things, which is almost just as important. Repetition is often the key to significant improvement.

Now think about your spiritual life. If you’re like me, I often forget to nurture this relationship on a consistent basis. Sometimes I go whole seasons neglecting my relationship with God.

How much better would we be at prayer or devotions or trusting God if we checked in daily? Imagine the confidence that would instill in us as Christians! The assuredness! Perhaps we’d even begin to witness and more readily pray for others.

Let’s pray that the Spirit would encourage us in the daily routine of spirituality. “Come near to God and he will come near to you” (James 4:8).
