Following God’s route

Our dogs are funny.

When we take them on walks, they try to lead the way because 1) they think they are in charge and 2) they walk the same route so often, they kind of know it by heart.

Sometimes we like to change the route just to throw them a curveball. As they step off a familiar curb and start to turn left, we guide them right. You can see the confusion in their eyes—the hesitation as they follow with a bit less bravado than before.

It makes them remember to trust us. It reminds them to be obedient.

Have you ever been walking through life, doing your usual thing, when a curveball comes along?

Maybe it’s God taking you on a new walking route—reminding you what it means to trust him and be obedient to his will.

Sometimes we walk ourselves on routes that aren’t good for us. That’s when we need to tune in to the Savior’s voice and let him guide us.

Of course, God doesn’t have us on leashes. Unlike my sweet pups, he allows us to misstep. We can even wander off if we’re not paying attention. When this happens, we need to be still and listen for his guidance. We may not understand where he is leading us, but it is always for our good.

“A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?” (Proverbs 20:24).
