As Christians raised in a culture where we tend to believe only what we see, the miracles of Scripture may run past us, like the current of a fast-moving river. We may not consider or dive into what those miracles tell us about the God we worship.
Psalm 114 recalls how God worked wonders with the physical qualities of the earth itself to keep safe and care for the Israelites. By God’s guidance, the Red Sea parted, the sun stood still during battle, and quail and manna settled on the ground. By God’s guidance, much-needed water flowed from solid rock.
And then the psalmist turns us to see these events as a witness to God’s capability and character: “Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord … who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water” (verses 7,8).
Imagine being in the disbelieving, thirsty crowd as water gushed from that hard rock. What emotions and thoughts would go through your head to see a pool of water where dry ground had been only minutes before?
Witnesses of miracles, in faith-filled moments, remember that anything is possible with God. They are in awe of God but also trust him. What is an example of God’s strength and majesty in Scripture or in your own experience that convinces you of God’s ability to work wonders for you?
Take some time to sit and pay attention. Then walk forward on your adventure with the One who can do anything.
