The world has seen something of royal pomp and circumstance in recent years. In the passing of Queen Elizabeth, many of us got a taste of the wealth and dazzling splendor of an earthly kingdom; immense crowds waited for hours to pay honor to the woman they admired.
Psalm 97 gives an account of heaven and earth honoring and worshiping God as sovereign: “The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice. Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne” (verses 1,2).
Can you see yourself in that rejoicing crowd?
How can we get in a celebratory spirit? Sometimes observing the dark sky with the distant moon and stars is enough to help us rejoice in our Creator. Sometimes we rejoice in the physical and spiritual gifts we receive.
We live under a wise and gracious Monarch, part of the royal family. Gifts of salvation and new life in Christ are renewed for us each day.
As you think about praising God, the Spirit wants to help navigate the hard questions. How have you been preserved by your Father-King? Can you see that light has been sown by him for you? Do you know the reality of God’s joy? What does it look like right now in your heart, home, place of worship to celebrate his rule?
“Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name!” (Psalm 97:12).
