Enemies

I was trying to play a video game with my son (and not doing a very good job) when I started to get overwhelmed by enemy fire.

“Ack! I think I went the wrong way! I’m getting attacked!” I groaned.

“No! That’s good!” my son explained. “If you’re running into a lot of enemies, that means you’re going the right way.”

I almost dropped my controller in astonishment. What a life lesson! What a peach of a teachable moment!

I can’t begin to count the number of times in my life when bad things have happened, one after another, and I thought to myself, “Wow, I must be doing something wrong!”

I never even thought to think, “Wow, I must be doing something RIGHT!”

Because when we’re doing right—when we’re walking with God the way we should or doing good things in his name—we’re wearing big targets on our backs, and Satan has us in his crosshairs.

In answer, God offers countless reassuring verses in Scripture that we can turn to when we feel overwhelmed by the enemies of this world.

“The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven” (Deuteronomy 28:7).

Enemy fire means we’re on the right path. But God’s right there with us!
