Blessing our socks off

We have a big dog who is about seven years old and loves nothing better than to beg for scraps of food at our little breakfast table. No matter what we are eating, she sits patiently at our elbows, staring up at us through doleful eyes … forever hopeful.

When we cook bacon or gravy, my husband will spoil the dog by pouring a tiny bit of bacon grease or gravy over the kibble in her bowl.

One afternoon he did this. But she was so obsessed with begging from me that she didn’t even notice the amazing treat he had left for her in her food dish.

“You’re so obsessed with other people’s food that you didn’t even notice the good treats I gave you!” My husband remarked, exasperated. “I blessed your socks off, and you didn’t even notice it!”

I laughed because humans are the same way, don’t ya think?

I wonder how many times a day the good Lord throws up his hands and sighs at us, saying, “I blessed your socks off! Why didn’t you notice?”

Truly, our heavenly Father gives us SO many good things. We can hardly keep track! Yet it’s so easy to become distracted by our “wants” that we fail to show gratitude. Let’s remember to say thank you today!

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
